Charles Joseph Reed worked as a railway porter, probably at Yate station and lived with his wife, Emmeline and children Daisy, Raymond and William at 6 Jubilee Terrace in Yate.
He enlisted in Bristol and joined the 13th Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment, one of 'Bristol's Own' a 'Pals' regiment. Charles was Killed in Action on the first day of the battle of the Somme July 1st 1916 and is remembered on the Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. Charles was 33 years old.
Charles Joseph Reed is remembered on the Chipping Sodbury and District War Memorial Cottage Hospital board, which is now at Yate and District Heritage Centre, under Yate.
