Charles was born in Thornbury, the son of a mason and the youngest of two brothers. By 1901 he had moved to London and was working as a gardener. He married Bessie Louisa Fry in in 1905 and their son Harold was born in 1913.
Charles was conscripted to the reserves on 26th February 1917 and initially enlisted in The Queen’s (Royal West Surrey Regiment) 15th Company (45644) later transferring to the 123rd Company, Labour Corps. At that time, he was described as being 5’5” tall and weighing 8st 8lb with grey eyes, brown hair and a fresh complexion. He was mobilised to France with the British Expeditionary Force on 14th March 1917 and was killed just two months later when a Howitzer field gun exploded. The cemetery where he is buried was used by the 41st Casualty Clearing Station and would have been where he was taken when he fell.
