Son of a pharmacist, Claude attended Chipping Sodbury Grammar School between 1925 and 1928. He achieved his School Certificate in 1930 and started his medical degree at Bristol University in 1932. He was a House Surgeon at Cossham Memorial Hospital in Bristol in 1939, living in Westbury on Trym, Bristol. He gained his medical degree on 5th March 1940 and died a few weeks later on 21st May 1940 after the battle of Arras during the Belgian Campaign and whilst withdrawing to Dunkirk.
He is buried at Longuenesse (St. Omer) Souvenir Cemetery. His gravestone bears the words “ He sacrificed his life succouring the wounded”.
