Clifford was born in Easton, Bristol the son of an engineer and the eldest of two children with a younger sister Iris.

Clifford enlisted in the Royal Artillery in 1940 and had his first posting in October 1941. His regiment (the 114 Field Regiment) served in Burma between 1943 and 1945 and Clifford died from complications of diphtheria in June 1945 in the 21st British General Military Hospital which was based in Calcutta at that time.
