Clifford’s father was a mason and a house decorator and Clifford had a younger brother and sister. Clifford joined the territorials in 1939.
Clifford’s regiment, he 50th Royal Tank, became part of the 23rd Armoured Brigade and was sent to the Middle East in May 1942 to join the Eighth Army. It went into action in July 1942 in the First Battle of El Alamein. The regiment suffered very heavy losses but Clifford survived this only to be Killed in Action 10 days later on the day after his 23rd birthday.
Clifford’s younger brother was also in the services and was stationed in England at the time of Clifford’s death. Clifford was described as having a quiet disposition and always being happy and cheerful.
