Clifford died in an air accident near Neath Port Talbot, Wales whilst training at Number 7 Bombing and Gunnery School. An experienced pilot, Clifford was flying a trainee air gunner in a Westland Wallace training bi-plane when it stalled at low altitude, dived into the ground and burned out, killing both occupants.
