Further information:
Cuthbert was born in Downend, the son of a park ranger and a middle child of twelve children with four sisters and seven brothers, two of whom were on active service at the time of Cuthbert's death and one of whom, Graham George, also died in the service of his country, one year after Cuthbert. He is commemorated on Staple Hill Memorial. Cuthbert married Laura Louisa Milton in November 1915 and enlisted in the Army the following month, in December 1915 and served with 284th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. At that time Cuthbert was recorded as being 5' 7 ½ " tall. Cuthbert and Laura had two boys, Cuthbert junior who was born the following year, in 1916, and Ronald who was born five months after Cuthbert had died.
Cuthbert was made acting Corporal in February 1916 then full Corporal five months later and was posted overseas with the British Expeditionary Force in March 1917. He was killed in action three months later although on the day of his death, there were no battles taking place. It is therefore possible that Cuthbert was a casualty of the ongoing trench warfare that accounted for around 300 deaths per day throughout the war. The cemetery where he is buried, was used by fighting units and field ambulances near the front line and amongst Cuthbert's personal effects, which were sent on to his wife, were a letter, photos and a cigarette case.
