On the day of his death, Cyril was taking part in a patrol from his Commando Unit that had been sent to Veere on the North East of the island of Walcheren in the Netherlands. They were travelling in a convoy of 4 amphibious Buffaloes and the second Buffalo struck a submerged 11inch shell rigged up to a post as a mine. It caused many casualties including Cyril.
