David was born and raised in Mangotsfield, the son of a general labourer and the youngest child of five with three brothers and one sister. His father died the same year that he was born.

David's Regiment was the 482nd (4th/1st South Midlands) Field Company, Royal Engineers.

David enlisted in 1914 and fought on the Western Front. He died at home from wounds sustained during active service, but the precise details are not known.
