David was born in Stapleton Bristol, the son of a dock worker and a middle child of 7 children. He had 4 sisters and 2 brothers.

David is recognised by the War Graves Commission although he never saw active service. He enlisted in the Navy approximately 3 weeks after the armistice, just before his 18th birthday and was described as 5’ 4½ in height with fair hair blue eyes and a fair complexion. His only ship was the Vivid II then 12 months after enlisting he accidentally drowned in the Tamar.
