Dennis Cowles was a Tailor who lived in Station Road, Yate. He was the son of George and Hannah Cowles, his father was a coal miner. There were six children in his family, Wallace, Dorothy, Lavinia, Leonard, Phillis and Dennis

Dennis enlisted in Bristol into the 7th Service Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment, he was Killed in Action on 10th February 1917. He is buried in the Amara War Cemetery, Mesopotamia. Dennis was just 21 years old when he died
