Born in Belfast, Ronald was one of several children including 2 older brothers, an older sister and a younger sister. He married Joan Royal Smith in the 2nd quarter of 1939 in Sodbury district and the couple stayed with her parents whilst Ronald was on active service. Ronald was killed the following year between 29/05/1940 and 02/06/1940. Ronald served with the British Expeditionary Force and took part in the retreat and evacuation at Dunkirk. He was recorded as missing believed killed as his body was not found.
