Douglas was born in Newport, Monmouthshire. He had a sister Veronica who was 11 years older than him and his father was a Civil and Mechanical Engineer and a Justice of the Peace. Douglas was educated at Lockers Park Preparatory School Hertfordshire followed by Winchester Public School and then Sandhurst Military College.
On 1st May 1917, at the age of 19, Douglas was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant in the army and mobilised to France with the British Expeditionary Force in February 1918. He died less than two months later at Number 8 General Hospital, Rouen, following on from wounds received in action at Moreuil Wood on the 1st April.
Douglas’s grandfather, Henry Godfrey Marsh had strong links to Winterbourne and his Uncle Henry William lived at Winterbourne Park. As a result, there is a family plaque inside the church as well as the commemorative window.
