He married Evelyn Strickland in October 1943 when he was 18. He joined the 12th which was an airborne glider battalion and on 24th March was deployed by Horsa glider for a bridgehead operation over the Rhine – Operation Varsity. The 12th succeeded in the task of capturing Hamminkeln but with very heavy losses - 140 men were killed, wounded or missing. Douglas was one of the casualties and was initially buried at Hamminkeln before being re-interred at Reichswald.
