Douglas joined up in 1940 and on gaining his wings he joined Bomber Command as a second pilot on a Whitley bomber. He was stationed at RAF Topcliffe North Yorkshire, and on the day of his death he and 4 fellow servicemen took off in Whitley Z6461 for a night bombing raid of Hamburg. The aircraft crashed into the sea and all crew members were killed. Only Douglas’s body and one other, were recovered from the sea about 3 months later. Died on either 2nd/3rd May 1941.
