Douglas was born and raised in Cornwall. He was the son of a general labourer and his parents married at the end of 1920 shortly before he was born. Douglas also had 4 half-brothers from his father's first marriage and his father was aged 54 when he was born.
Douglas enlisted in the Royal Artillery in 1940 and on the day of his death was serving aboard the Dutch Motor Merchant 'Pacific'. The vessel was part of convoy BTC-108 on route from Maryport Cumbria to Penryn Cornwall carrying a cargo of 350 tons of coal. At 05.30 hours on 26 March 1945 the vessel was torpedoed by U-boat U-399 and sunk. There were 5 casualties, among them Douglas, and 5 survivors. Douglas’s records state that he died from drowning.
