Douglas died when his ship, HMS Ardent a Royal Navy destroyer, was sunk on 8 June 1940 while defending the aircraft carrier HMS Glorious from the German battlecruisers Gneisernau and Scharnhorst. Two men were rescued by a German seaplane 5 days after the ship was sunk but one subsequently died in hospital and everyone else including Douglas perished.
