Edward was born in Bristol, the eldest of five children with two sisters and two brothers. His father was headmaster at Yate School and his mother was a schoolmistress.
Edward enlisted in the Navy on 19th April 1917 when he was described as 5' 5" tall with dark hair, grey eyes and a pale complexion. Edward's Naval career was cut short when he died from an abdominal injury just three weeks after enlisting.
