Edward was the son of a labourer and a labourer himself. He had an older brother, John. Edward married Norah Bridget Elliott in 1929 and together they had one son Terence who was aged 9 when Edward died.
On the day of his death, Edward was serving aboard the British motor tanker Adellen which was sailing from Newport Monmouthshire, as part of convoy ONS 67, bound for Trinidad and carrying a cargo of ballast. At 07.03 hours in the middle of the North Atlantic, U-boat U-155 fired three torpedoes at the convoy hitting and sinking the Adellen and one other ship in the convoy, the Sama. 29 crew members and 7 gunners from the Adellen died, including Edward, leaving just 12 survivors. These were picked up by a rescue ship and transferred to Halifax, Canada. Edward died on 22nd February 1942 (on Memorial as 24th).
