Edward joined the Royal Navy on April 17th 1934 at the age of 20 and served eight years in the submarine service.
H.M. Simoom sunk on 19th November 1943 on the approach to the Dardanelles, north-west of the Turkish Aegean island of Bozcaada. She hit a mine whilst running on the surface that resulted in extensive damage near the submarine’s starboard hydroplane causing her to sink. All the crew including Edward were lost.
