Edward served with the 2nd/1st South Midland Company, Royal Engineers. On 8th February 1916, he was Killed in Action by shell-fire while on a working party in the trenches

Prior to enlisting Edward had worked for the family blacksmith business next to the Fox Inn in Hawkesbury Upton, specialising in cycle repairs

Edward Coombs is remembered on the Chipping Sodbury and District War Memorial Cottage Hospital board, now at Yate and District Heritage Centre under Hawkesbury
