Edward Fred Spencer Preddy was born on the 24th January 1892 at Mangotsfield. The son of George Absolam and Ann Preddy, he was one of four children, John Ginlford, Lily Louise and William George. The family home was in Broad Street, Staple Hill.
Edward was married to Kathleen (nee Ashwell-Churchill) at Gloucester, in March 1916 and they lived together in Somerville Road, St Andrews, Bristol. He was an Elementary School Teacher prior to joining up with the Royal Garrison Artillary, where he rose to be 2nd Lieutenant and Acting Captain.
Edward Preddy was killed in action on 8 December 1917, at the age of 25 years. He is remembered at the Fifteen Ravine British Cemetary, Villers-Plouich, Departement du Nord, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France. The inscription on his grave is – “AT REST LORD I BELIEVE HELP THOU MINE UNBELIEF”.
