Further information:
Edwin Sidney Perks was born in 1899, the son of Edward and Alice Perks. On 24th August 1918, the 8th Battalion, Princess Charlotte of Wales's (Royal Berkshire Regiment) was in action on the former Somme battlefields. By now the fighting had returned to a war of movement following the start of the allied advance which had begun with the Battle of Amiens on 8th August 1918. Edwin was killed in the action to capture the huge Lochnagar Mine Crater – a dominant feature of the 1916 battlefield – and still there today!
Edwin Sidney Perks is remembered on the Chipping Sodbury and District War Memorial Cottage Hospital board, now at Yate and District Heritage Centre under Hawkesbury
