He lived with his widowed mother and younger brother Cyril an electrical engineering clerk in Yate in 1939 and to begin with both brothers were air raid wardens.
Edwin signed up with the Gloucestershire Regiment (10th Battalion) and was killed fighting the Japanese 18th Imperial Division at the Battle of Pinwe in Burma, when his company was hit by heavy Japanese mortar and gun fire.
