Further information:

Edwin served with the 1st/4th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment. Edwin’s battalion mobilised for war and landed at Boulogne at the end of March 1915, where the formation became the 144th Brigade of the 48th Division and engaged in various actions on the Western Front including, in 1916 The Battle of Albert and The Battle of the Ancre. Edwin is recorded as being killed in action, but on the day of his death his battalion was not involved in a specific engagement therefore it is possible that Edwin was a victim of daily trench warfare which accounted for 300 deaths per day throughout the war. Edwin, along with many of his fallen comrades, was reburied in Assevillers Cemetery after the Armistice when soldiers were brought in from other burial grounds and the battlefields.
