Further information:

Edwin was born at Oldland, the son of a bootmaker and a middle child of ten children with four sisters and five brothers. Edwin married Mabel Plucknett in 1915 and a year later their daughter Eileen was born. Eileen was just 3 years old when Edwin died.

Edwin’s battalion (the 13th, Glosters) mobilised to France in March 1916 and fought in the battles of the Somme and Ypres. They also fought in the Battles of the Lys and it is likely that Edwin was wounded during the Battle of the Scherpenberg (29 April). He was shot in the face and shoulders and was taken to the War Hospital at the Orphans House in Ghent where he died of his wounds on the 3rd May 1918.
