Eli was born in Oldland Common, the son of a paper mill worker and a middle child of five children with two brothers and two sisters.

Eli served with the 2nd/5th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment and was Killed in Action during the Allied Hundred Days Offensive (8 August – 11 November 1918) that brought about the end of WW1 but at a cost of over a million allied casualties. Eli’s body was never identified and the Ploegsteert Memorial where he is remembered, commemorates more than 11,000 servicemen of the United Kingdom and South African forces who died in this sector during the First World War and have no known grave.
