Further information:
Eric was the son of a labourer and was born in Reading.
Eric served with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Berkshire (Princess Charlotte of Wales) Regiment. He fought with his battalion in the Burma Campaign including the Battles of Imphal and Kohima in 1944. He died of wounds sustained during fierce fighting to capture Meiktila and Mandalay from the Japanese. The battle ended in a decisive allied victory for the allies which was down to a combination of courage and endurance of the troops and the superb leadership of their commander William Slim.
Eric was originally buried in Mandalay War Cemetery, which was one of several battlefield cemeteries, and his remains were transferred in 1951 when Taukkyan War Cemetery was built.
