Ernest had a brother 2 years younger and he married Lily in 1945 just a few months before his death. On the night of the 15th April, Ernest and his navigator set out from Cambrai airport in France heading for Germany on a night bombing raid of Berlin in a Mosquito Mk IV. They did not arrive and no more was heard from the crew who were both recorded as missing presumed killed. He and his navigator were initially buried in Vietlubbe, Northern Germany in un-marked graves but were later identified and reburied in Berlin War Cemetery.
