Further information:

Ernest was the youngest of three siblings born to Caroline Hodges before she married Alfred Cordy a brickmaker. Caroline married Alfred Cordy in 1895, the same year that Ernest was born and then went on to give birth to another boy and three more girls. Ernest’s surname was temporarily changed to Cordy. His brother Alfred who was ten years older, died in the service of his country three months before Ernest.

Ernest's battalion (the 2nd/5th) went over to France in May 1916 and Ernest took part in various actions on the Western Front including the Attack on Fromelles. Ernest died during the Pursuit of the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line (14 March – 5 April 1917). Ernest’s body was never identified and the memorial where he is remembered commemorates over 14,000 casualties of the United Kingdom and 300 of the South African Forces who have no known grave and who died on the Somme from 21 March to 7 August 1918.
