Indian Army Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.

Trained at Northwich and Manchester and graduated in 1937 from the Institute of Mechanical Engineers. He had one daughter. In 1940 he was granted a commission as lieutenant in the Indian Army Ordnance Corps. Hicks was on a routine mail flight as a passenger on a Douglas Dakota 111 between Calcutta and Dehli. The plane hit a thunderstorm, the pilot lost control and the plane broke up. All 18 people on board were killed. The accident was thought to have been due to a combination of pilot fatigue and a non-functional artificial horizon meter on the plane control panel.
