Ernest was born in Kingswood the second youngest of five children with two brothers and two sisters. His father who was a shoemaker, died when Ernest was aged 12. Ernest married Mary Ann Hancock in 1904 and together they had four sons. Mary Ann died 4 months before Ernest was killed.
Ernest served with the 2nd Battalion, Princess Charlotte of Wales's (Royal Berkshire Regiment), his battalion mobilised to France in November 1914 and fought in various actions on the Western Front. Ernest was killed in action during the second battle of Bapaume (21 August – 3 September 1918). Bapaume was part of the Hundred Days Offensive (8 August – 11 November 1918) that brought about the end of WW1 but at a cost of over a million allied casualties.
