Ernest was born in Kingswood to Louisa one of two daughters of Isaac and Caroline. When Ernest was aged 3 his mother married and left Ernest to be raised by his grandparents. Isaac was a miner and he and Caroline also had three sons who lived with them when Ernest was a child.

Ernest enlisted in the territorial force in May 1913 at the age of 17 and a half and was described as 5' 7¾ " tall and of good physical development. In August 1916 he was passed as fit for general service and posted to Rouen as part of the medical team stationed at the 21st casualty clearing station near Amiens. He was killed in the course of his duty, a year later and the cemetery where he is buried was sited adjacent to the Dulhallow Advanced Dressing Station. Included among Ernest’s personal effects, sent to his grandmother after his death, were a book of poems and a whistle.
