Ernest served in the 2nd Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. He and his regiment came over to France in the D Day landings and took part in the Normandy campaign fighting at La Belle Epine (near Trungy), at Hottot, at Le Lion Vert and at Les Forges on the road to Conde sur Noireau. During one of these battles Ernest lost his life.
