In 1907, at the age of 15, Ernest had enlisted as a boy soldier into the 2nd Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment. He served in India and was in China at the outbreak of war. After service at Ypres in 1915, the battalion was posted to Salonika in 1916, a campaign in which more men suffered from disease and illness such as dysentery than from enemy action. It was in Salonika on Sunday 1st October 1916 that Ernest died of wounds received in action
