Ernest Shellard was born in 1894 (1st Quarter) in Mangotsfield, Bristol and Baptised at Christ Church, Downend on 2 March 1898, the same day as his brother Alfred Gilbert. The son of George and Edith Mary Shellard, he was the oldest of the two boys, his younger brother Alfred Gilbert also died during the war. The family home was in Staple Hill, Bristol.

Ernest was a Boot Maker until he joined up as a Private with the Grenadier Guards, 4th Batallion. Ernest was Killed in Action at Flanders, France and died on 7 October 1917 aged 23 years. He is remembered at Tyne-Cot Memorial, West Vlaanderen, Belgium.

Ernest is commemorated on the Christ Church Downend Memorial and the Staple Hill (Page Park) Memorial.
