The son of a woodman, Ernest married Joan in 1939 and had a daughter Shirley Jean who was aged just 3 when he was Killed in Action fighting in the Tunisian Campaign. The 9th Lancers (9th Queen's Royal Lancers, Royal Armoured Corps), as part of the 8th army crossed into Tunisia on February 4th 1943, having pursued German forces through Libya. The Axis troops became trapped in a pocket along the north central Tunisian coast and Ernest died during fighting in this area.
