Frederick was born in Moseley in Warwickshire,

Frederick mobilised to France with his battalion ("B" Company. 2nd Battalion, East Surrey Regiment) in January 1915 and he lasted just three months at the front. He was killed in action during the Battle of St Julien, one of the engagements of The Second Battles of Ypres (22 April – 25 May 1915). The result of the Ypres action was inconclusive, at a cost to the allies of 81,000 casualties. Frederick's body was never identified and the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, where he is remembered, bears the names of more than 54,000 soldiers who died in Belgium and have no known grave.
