Francis Wilfred Candy was born in 1895 in Kingswood in Gloucestershire. His parents were Albert and Julia Candy (nee Neale). They had married in 1885 in the September Quarter in the Dursley district. Francis’ siblings were Gertrude, Florence, Elsie, Bertha and Violet. He may have had more siblings younger than him

Francis enlisted in Bristol and joined the 1st Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment as a private. He was Killed in Action on 6 April 1915 at the age of 20. His Adjutant’s testimony written to his mother from the battlefield said that he had always done his duty well and that he had been a good soldier. He is remembered on the Le Touret Memorial in France

At the time of Francis’ death his mother was living in Winterbourne and she seems to have remarried becoming Mrs. Fifield
