On the day of his death Frank was serving aboard the unescorted Norwegian Steam Merchant 'Galatea' on route from Liverpool to Barry in Wales carrying a cargo of ballast. In the evening of 21st of January 1945 the vessel was hit by one torpedo from U-boat U-1051 and sank immediately off Bardsey Island in the St. Georges Channel. The master, 16 crew members and three gunners including Frank, were lost and the sole survivor was picked up a few hours later and landed in Liverpool. Frank was originally reported as missing which was changed to presumed killed in action 6 months later.
