Frank served on the S.S. Toronto which was employed as a weather observation ship in the Atlantic from October 1940. It was reported missing after sending a last routine weather report at 15.00 hours on 1 July. The Toronto was unescorted and was hit in the bow by a torpedo from U-boat 108 at 18.25 hours. She sank within 3 minutes about 500 miles north of the Azores and Frank along with 42 others lost his life. There were no survivors.
