Frank was born in Kingswood, the son of a gardener and a middle child of six children with three sisters and two brothers.

Frank initially enlisted in the Gloucestershire Regiment (25360) then transferred to the 135th Company, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). Frank was killed in action during The Battle of the Somme (1 July – 18 November 1916). The result of the battle was indecisive at a cost of 620,000 allied casualties. Frank was buried near to where he fell and reburied from the battlefield after the armistice. The cemetery where he is buried was named after a German trench.
