Frederick's battalion (the 8th, Glosters) mobilised to France in July 1915, where they fought in various actions on the Western Front including the Battle of Loos and the Battles of the Somme. In September 1916 Frederick was wounded, and awarded a wound stripe. Just two months later, Frederick was wounded again in one of the Battles of the Somme, the Battle of The Ancre (13th - 18th November 1916) which was a British victory but at the cost of 22,000 casualties. Frederick subsequently died from his wounds and was buried at Grandcourt Cemetery which was close to the battlefield.
