Frederick had an older brother and 6 younger sisters. He married Beatrice Flower in 1920 and had one son.

Frederick died along with 14 others when his ship (S.S. Bristol City), was on a routine and unescorted cargo run between Bristol and New York and after it was torpedoed by U-boat 358 near Newfoundland. A second ship the Wentworth was sunk at the same time and the 29 survivors from the Bristol City along with 42 survivors from the Wentworth were picked up by HMS Loosestrife and transferred to safety.
