During 1946 HMS Saumarez joined the 3rd Destroyer Flotilla, Mediterranean Fleet in Malta. On 22nd October that year whilst on passage in the Corfu Channel with HMS Volage, both ships struck mines. HMS Saumarez sustained major damage and was towed clear of the area by the damaged HMS Volage. Frederick was one of 43 fatalities.
