Frederick was with his regiment fighting in the North African campaign which came to an end in May 1943 with the surrender of the Axis forces. Bone was occupied by Allied forces on 12 November 1942 and became important as a supply port and for its airfield. The 70th General Hospital was also there during the early months of 1943. Frederick’s regiment went on to fight in Sicily in July 1943, but Frederick remained in Bone where he was reported in September to have died of wounds, presumably sustained during fighting earlier in the year.
