Frederick was born in Fulham in London, the eldest child of a letterpress printer. Frederick had a younger sister Adelaide and married Doris May Legg in Downend in 1933.
On the day of his death Frederick was serving aboard the British Steam Minesweeper 'Myrtle', when the vessel was sweeping the Thames estuary. On the 14th June 1940 the crew hoisted a magnetic mine aboard which subsequently exploded killing all 22 of the crew including Frederick and sinking the vessel.
