Frederick was born in Bitton, the middle son of three. His father worked as a bootmaker and his mother as a corset maker. In 1901 Frederick was also working in the boot industry along with his father and older brother.
Frederick served with the 1st/4th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers, his battalion mobilised to France in April 1915 and took part in various actions on the Western Front including The Battle of Morval in 1916 and The Second Battle of Passchendaele in 1917. Frederick was killed in action during The First Battles of the Somme which was the allied response to the German offensive Operation Michael (21 March – 5 April 1918). The result of the battles was indecisive but the allies suffered 239,800 casualties including Frederick.
