Frederick was born in Painswick, the son of a tailor and a middle child of eleven children with a half-sister, a sister and eight brothers.
Frederick is likely to have joined up on his 18th birthday at the beginning of 1915. He would then have been based at Chelmsford to do his basic training. He died at Chelmsford of pneumonia just a few weeks after enlisting, before he saw any active service.
