Fred was killed fighting the Japanese 18th Imperial Division at the Battle of Pinwe in Burma when his company was hit by heavy Japanese mortar and gun fire. Coalpit Heath memorial gives his date of death as November 21st 1944, The Commonwealth War Graves Commission gives the date as November 23rd 1944.
